The OV –560 RET is the latest addition to our veterinary VX SERIES range. This veterinary hematology analyzer is now the 5 population alternative offering reticulocyte detection.
Reticulocytes are young red blood cells from the bone marrow. Measuring them is essential to obtain an accurate interpretation of anemia, that is an abnormal decrease in the level of hemoglobin in the blood, i.e. a decrease in the production of red blood cells. Red blood cells allow oxygen to be carried to the body’s cells and their insufficiency can have serious consequences such as weight loss, great fatigue, palpitations, tachycardia and changes in breathing frequency.
There are many causes of anemia grouped into 2 categories :
- Regenerative anemias :
The bone marrow tries to compensate for the losses by producing reticulocytes. Their rate is therefore high. They are caused by a loss (bleeding) or a short life span of red blood cells.
- Aregenerative or poorly regenerative anemias :
The bone marrow does not compensate for the loss of red blood cells. The reticulocyte count is therefore low. They are due to a failure in the production of red blood cells.
The OV-560 RET allows you to obtain a complete blood count and formula: red blood cells, reticulocytes, white blood cells and platelets. This analysis is performed on a blood sample. The reticulocyte analysis is performed independently which allows the laboratory freedom in the execution and optimized use of the parameter.
After identifying the regenerative character, it may be necessary to study other information from the CBC and biochemistry to identify the underlying process.
